Fun with Photoshop

February 5, 2009

poppyme61So I’m done futzing around with templates, and thanks again to my 13 year old son, Nicky, I’m delighted with the photo from my garden that appears in parts at the top and bottom.  A year or so ago I finally succumbed to the pressure to put a “real” picture of myself on all the social and chat networks where I have a profile.  I use this photo everywhere.  Technically I am in it, but in the size that it usually appears, you have to squint to see me, which suits me just fine.

It took Nicky about half an hour to create this image, including taking pictures of me sitting in his room in front of his green screen.  I provided the picture of the poppy which I’d taken some other time.

For this blog, I selected the free azul theme from Switchroyale because I liked the layout and features, and it said it would be easy to edit.  I tried to get Nicky to robo-photoshop me through the picture replacement work for the blog, but after about 20 seconds he asked for the mouse, took my place at the computer, and finished it while I tried to keep up with what the heck he was doing.  Took him maybe 10 minutes to do both images.  While humming gleefully.  Then I spent much longer messing around with colors and backgrounds so I could ultimately make minor css and php changes and voila, this blog.  I’m done playing with it unless it surprises me in a bad way by breaking.goblet-cropped3

I asked Nicky how he learned so much about Photoshop and he claims he just played with it, as in: what happens if you hit this button?  I guess that shows what you can learn if you spend hours, days, weeks glued to the keyboard.  He is even more proficient at 3ds Max, and loves learning from the geeks on “Max forums”, like understanding the angle of refraction. Here is his latest bit of 3ds max art.  Isn’t it pretty?

But my favorite creation of his so far remains the bouncing jelly jars that he made a while ago.  The resolution is downgraded quite a bit on youtube, the original is perfectly sharp, but you get the idea.
