Metaverse U

May 30, 2009

The day after I blogged that I was dropping my Wonderland 101 self-study course, I got an email from the famous and wonderful Eilif Trondsen telling me that I really should attend Metaverse U at the end of May.  I met Eilif several years ago when I contacted him through linkedin, two or three steps away, to ask him for an informational interview.  He’d been at SRI for ~25 years, and I’d been at Sun for 20, and I asked him for an informational interview, which he granted and then sent me to talk with half a dozen other people at various companies.  That is why I love informational interviews – you meet interesting people and learn all kinds of things.

So yesterday I went up to Stanford for Day 1 of Metaverse U, and today I watched parts of Day 2 on the live feed. It was almost enough to tempt me back into the land of virtual worlds, but not quite.  I’m having too much fun now learning about energy management, and progress is just too slow if I do so many things in parallel.  But if I was going to invest more time in virtual worlds, I would continue with Wonderland and possible also try building Sirikata.  I would keep my eye on what is happening in this space by joining the VirtualWorldSIG (Eilif is one of the co-chairs). And I’m looking in to sending my in-house 3Ds Max artist to a teen summer camp at Stanford that I learned about from the professor doing the art for Sirikata, Chris Platz.

My favorite presentation was probably the next to last one, about the 3D Web, in part because it mentioned green buildings, the Open Architecture Network and GeoSherpa.

  1. Your in-house 3Ds Max artist?! I guess Nick wouldn’t appreciate our calling him the In-house, but that’s what leapt to mind.

  2. Glad you liked the presentation. It is exciting to see how the 3D web is helping promote these domains.
